Overview

Student checking for water creaturesGood to Grow is a whole day program that helps students develop an appreciation of the importance of healthy waterways in supporting living things.

The program begins with students discussing their knowledge about the growth, change and offspring of living things. Students then investigate Toohey Forest and search for and collect insects. They also identify a range of common aquatic animals using pipettes, petri dishes and an iPad application. Using a large digital microscope outputting to a 60-inch screen, students view and discuss the life cycle stages of the animals they have collected, enabling them to view a variety of eggs, larvae and adults. Lifecycles are explored further through a ‘big’ book reading, The Masked Hunter, as well as sketching the life cycle stages of a dragonfly assisted by 3D models.

The program concludes with students getting up close and personal with live animals such as turtles, lizards and a snake.
